HAMPTON PARK, a 60-acre park next to the Citadel, is the largest park on the Charleston peninsula. Visitors will enjoy landscaped floral gardens, a pond, fountain, and gazebo. The park is named in honor of Confederate General Wade Hampton III. However, this wasn't always the case. In fact, the land that is now Hampton Park has a surprisingly rich history. From its early years as a working plantation to its use as a horse racing track, union soldier prisoner camp and cemetery, the land has served a variety of purposes through the years and has a unique and storied past.
CHARLESTON GREENHOUSE, in their busy workrooms tucked away near the stables at Hampton Park. The greenhouse, established in 1987, is supported by an almost all-volunteer staff who produce 49,000 annuals and 15,000 tropical plants for the city of Charleston’s 90 parks every year. More than just a…
