The Council of Garden Clubs of Greater Charleston hosted a unique and inspiring event on February 16, bringing together garden club members and enthusiasts for an afternoon filled with creativity, friendly competition, and community spirit. The event, called A Beautiful Table Affair, was more than just a luncheon; it was a celebration of artistry in table setting, floral design, and the joy of gathering around a beautifully arranged table.

A Gathering of Garden Clubs and Creativity

Held at St. James Episcopal Church on James Island, the event welcomed guests from various garden clubs across the Lowcountry. The venue was transformed into a showcase of imaginative table designs, each telling its own story through themes and decorations. The competition invited participants to set tables for eight guests in one of three categories:

  • Gardening Gone Wild

  • A Holiday Affair

  • Anything Goes

Each category challenged competitors to express their creativity and design skills in unique ways. Guests had the opportunity to walk among the tables, appreciating the details and craftsmanship before casting their votes for the winners.

Highlights from the Competition

The competition featured impressive entries from many talented garden club members. Among them, two members of the St. Paul’s Garden Club stood out with their exceptional designs.

Camille Campbell, the club president, earned second place in the Holiday Affair category. Her table was a patriotic tribute to the 250th anniversary of the United States. The design combined traditional red, white, and blue accents paired with stunning White House Ornaments and Presidential china, creating a festive and elegant atmosphere that resonated with the judges and guests alike.

Meanwhile, Jess Charters, also from St. Paul’s Garden Club, designed an elegant floral-themed table for the Gardening Gone Wild category. Her arrangement showcased a lush, natural aesthetic that brought the garden indoors, using a variety of blooms, seeds, greenery and beautiful floral dishes to create a vibrant and inviting setting.

The Luncheon and Community Spirit

Beyond the competition, the event provided a catered lunch, allowing attendees to relax, enjoy good food, and connect with fellow garden club members. This social aspect was a key part of the afternoon, fostering new friendships and strengthening the bonds within the gardening community.

The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with conversations flowing easily as guests shared their passion for gardening, design, and community involvement. The event served as a reminder of how shared interests can bring people together in meaningful ways.

Supporting a Worthy Cause

Proceeds from A Beautiful Table Affair went to support the ongoing work of the Council of Garden Clubs of Greater Charleston. This organization plays an important role in promoting gardening education, conservation, and community beautification projects throughout the region.

By attending and participating in the event, guests contributed to these efforts, helping to ensure that the local environment and gardening culture continue to thrive.

If you missed this year’s event, consider joining next time to experience the charm and creativity firsthand. Supporting local garden clubs and their activities helps keep the spirit of gardening alive and thriving in the Lowcountry.
